This historical novel is set during the persecution of French Protestants (Huguenots) under the reign of Henri II. The story is about Nigel, a Scottish adventurer, who comes to France looking for a commission in the French navy. He arrives during that very volatile time of the suppression of the Huguenots. He secures a position on French ship bound for the coasts of Brazil carrying Huguenot refugees wanting to create a haven for Protestants in the New World. Admiral Villegagnon is given the task of forming the colony of "France Antarctique" for the Catholic king. The story weaves an interesting personal adventure of our Scottish sailor through struggles of faith, intrigue, battles for survival against the Portuguese, romance, and the inevitable annihilation of the colony.
